When will we be able to sync via WiFi?

Are we ever going to be able to sync via WiFi? I want to be able to schedule
my device (and those of my wife and kids) to automatically sync in the middle
of the night. I cannot understand why this is not possible. If this is
possible, please let me know what I need to do. Is there a registry hack that
will enable it?

Hello,

Wireless Synchronization was removed as a it was a potential security issue.
Many, many people have expressed dismay over this removal.

So I just read an old blog on the subject at
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/...commentmessage

Is there any update as to when it will be fixed? It's been like 3 years now,
surely there must be some news (assuming they plan to fix it)? Is there an
alternative software we can use to sync over WiFi?

You can sync with an Exchange server via WiFi. If you happen to run
Exchange at home, you could do that. You can also get a managed Exchange
account from various companies. In that case, they run Exchange for you and
you sync with that (from both your desktop PC and the device), via WiFi, if
you like. You might check this thread, also:

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...a582cebcd2260d

My impression is that Microsoft does not see this missing WiFi sync with a
single desktop PC as a bug.

Well unfortunately I am not a business. I am just a family man and my family
uses Windows Mobile phones. I am just trying to make it easy for everyone to
sync their devices. It doesn't really make any sense to buy a mobile
"computer" with wireless data and then be forced to tie it down with a cable
every day. So, paying for an exchange server is pretty much out of the
question. Does an exchange server sync all the same stuff as a regular PC-
favorites, files, etc, or is it only contacts and mail?
Boy, I sure hope either Microsoft puts this functionality back (are we
really letting "security" push us backwards?) or some other company makes a
sync app that allows our mobile devices to be mobile. It's been like 3 years
since this feature was removed for security reasons. If there is no news of a
possible fix yet, I have doubts that we'll even see it. Well, at least until
Google, Palm, Blackberry and Apple demonstrate that they the feature in their
sync apps (do they?).

The security removal isn't because of something that's fixable, or so I
understand. The concern is based on having a device that's not necessarily
inside the building, potentially bridging the outside network (phone
network, Starbucks down the street, etc.), with the WiFi network inside the
company. If my read of this is right, enterprise customers were unwilling
to have that ability built into the devices and ActiveSync on the desktop --
too dangerous. Microsoft preferred to fix this by pointing users to a
connection point that's already supposedly secure, Exchange, and limiting
desktop sync to connections that are direct and short-range, USB and
Bluetooth (and note that when you plug in USB, it disables the WiFi
connection to your local Starbucks). I don't know if it's the right choice
or not, but I understand the justification.

Look at your own comments, "or some other company makes a sync app that
allows our mobile devices to be mobile." However, you just got done saying
that you don't want to pay for something to fix the 'problem'. Why would
some other company invest resources in building a sync system that you are
unwilling to pay for? If $10 or $15 a month is worth it to you, you can use
managed Exchange, as I mentioned. If it's not worth that much, I just can't
see much incentive for anyone to work on it.

You could look at the software mentioned in the thread I pointed you to.
There are several relatively low-cost alternatives there.

Actually, plugging in the USB does not disable the phones data connection.
It's quite common for people to use their phone as a modem (using the phones
data connection on the computer). Also, when you set up a partnership in
Windows Vista's Mobile Device manager (what they are calling Activesync in
Vista) asks you if you want to disable or allow the phones network
connections while syncing.
I just don't understand why we can't secure the activesync connection the
same way exchange is supposedly secure. And make it an option that you can
disable for the corporate users that don't want it.

It disables WiFi, generally, although there's some indication that Microsoft
may have backed off on that. The concern isn't necessarily rational but, if
it's widely accepted by IT managers at large companies, Microsoft cares.

It's not a matter of they *can't*; it's a matter of they don't want to
invest in securing desktop machines in the same way they have concentrated
on doing for the server and Exchange. It takes people and time and
equipment to do those things and they clearly don't want to invest in that,
based on the low quality of ActiveSync...

Beyond the discussion you have with Paul, you are actually asking for more
than WiFi AS being restored. When we had it, you could connect your PPC to
your network (via an access point, P to P ad hoc was real tricky) and then
attach to AS much like a direct connection. That was a manual process
initiated from the PPC. Once connected it would stay connected, until you
stopped it. As you have undoubtedly noticed, you cannot hook up more than
one WM device to the same PC and have them all connect. One connects, the
others only charge. There is no capability, as things are currently written
to have multiple devices connected, and have them connect and disconnect
unattended. There is no 'scheduling', it is connected and syncing, or not.
There wasn't such a feature when we had WiFi sync either. So there is a new
request, and it could be implemented over multiple USB connections, as well
as over WiFi. You indicated you wanted the Wife and Kids units sync'd. All
to the exact same calendar? If not, then you need to establish some way of
switching to the right calendar profile, based on the device connected,
before syncing. This is another feature that doesn't exist. I don't do it,
but am told that you can change Outlook profiles (different user logged in)
and sync different WM devices with different info. Again though not an
automatic process, and not done currently with multiple connections,
hardwired or otherwise. If you want them all sync'd to the exact same
calendar/contacts, etc, fine, you can do that now as many of us with
multiple devices do...just one at a time.

So, while I also lamented the demise of WiFi sync, which really was the
demise of IP sync to desktop Outlook, just putting that back wouldn't solve
what it appears your requirement is. If they were inclined to solve your
multi-device, multisync problem, they could do so via multiple USB ports or
potentially over BT, and not recant on their security issue assessment.

So, without some significant change to the sync concept, and capability,
putting WiFi back won't do what you want. My only real suggestion is to get
the Wife and Kids their own PCs

Hi,
Actually there are options to prevent the Windows Mobile device from using
the data connection.

Also, the reason that Wi-Fi sync was removed was due to the requirement to
have an open port on the desktop in ActiveSync.

Overall I have to say that Microsoft has released enough versions of
ActiveSync 4.x for me to realize that I doubt that they will add Wi-Fi sync
back. If they did want to add it back, it would have already been there and
also added to WMDC.
