Hi,
You're correct in that this place is for help, despite the detractors. While
most manufacturers and distributors only have preloaded Vista systems on the
shelves, it was fairly easy to order systems with XP installed instead.
Others have offered downgrade rights as well, you just had to ask. Sometimes
though, hardware support for the new system is non-existent in XP, so
installing that over Vista is not an option. Keep in mind that XP is now 7
years old, and support for it will be fading over the next few years.
Similar happened with Win98, and at 10 years old it's now obsolete.
As a bit of an explanation, part of the problem that you and others are
encountering is that support for devices under a new operating system is
often lacking. When a new OS is released, device manufacturers have to
rewrite drivers and supporting software to meet new requirements. The
problem with this is that there is no profit involved in this process, so
many choose to invest their development budget in new hardware rather than
in support for old hardware, and the consumer is left with few options.
There are some that are proficient enough to modify .inf files to work under
a new operating system, but often times the firmware for the device (the
instruction set housed in the devices' electronics) is incompatible, so
unless the manufacturer releases an update there is little that can be done.
