Web Folders Problem

This may be more of an IE7 thing than a Vista thing, but...

I have no trouble accessing web folders on an XP machine running IE6.
I use two different methods: 1) "File --> Open" "Open as Web Folder",
and 2) a URL embedded in a web page to open a folder as a web folder.
Both of these work well with XP/IE6. However, NEITHER work from my
Vista machine with IE7. Instead, I get "Internet Explorer could not
open ... as a web Folder. Would you like to see its default view
instead?"

I'm guessing this is some kind of security or permissions issue, but
I've tried moving the site in question to my "Trusted Sites" and that
didn't help. I've tweaked pretty much every security setting I can
imagine would make a difference, but have had no luck. Any ideas?

I have not used WebDAV since using Vista, but I have heard so many people
having problems with it. Search Google for WebDAV Vista problems.

Do not use IE7 for Web Folders use Windows Explorer. Create a network
location in "Computer"

Open "Computer" right click anywhere in the right pane and select ADD A
NETWORK LOCATION then follow the wizard.

Whereas I understand this as an alternative, it seems like a lame
solution. If web folders don't work in IE7, why have the checkbox?
Also, the fact that the URL no longer works seems like a large step in
the wrong direction for me, when I think of needing to support users
who are barely comfortable with computers, let alone the process of
mapping a network location!

Is there no way this can be done in Vista/IE7 apart from mapping?
Please tell me that's not true!

I tried installing this, but it doesn't appear to have made any
difference. :-(

Where you see Mapping your web folder from within Windows Explorer as
an altrernative and lame, I find using IE7 to do this an
alternative and lame.

While you try and access your web folders from within IE and have to
submit your user name and passowrd per visit, which then will open
Windows explorer anyways to manage your files all I have to do is
double click my web folder drive in Windows explorer and I'm there.

IE is a browser not a file manager, even though you can access web
folders from within it doesn't mean it's the best way to do so.
Windows has always had multiple routes to get to the same location,
the trick is learning which routes are better.

Were you able to map your web folders with the Wizard in Windows
Explorer? That would be helpful in diagnosing your original issue.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I don't necessarily see using
Windows Explorer as lame - in fact I agree with you that it's a more
logical place for this kind of functionality. What I think is lame is
that this functionality seems to be BROKEN in IE7. Also, the fact
that the URL doesn't work is a pain, since re-educating users,
especially ones who use the service only very occasionally, is not
something I look forward to. It will probably mean that I need to
walk through this with users every time they need to use it, since
it's nowhere near as intuitive as telling them simply to click on a
picture in a web page!

I'm still hoping someone can tell me how to do this in IE7, especially
with the URL.

Is there a way you can create a public web folder (test) or share the
URl you mention? I really have no issue accessing my web folders from
within IE7.

I'd like to try and test it on my end.
