web hosting

I am looking for information about hosting my own website. Have Vista
business loaded on my test PC. and vist home premium on my main pc.
Can anyone give me advise as to how to go about setting a pc up as a web
host and what programmes would be recommended. I would like this a economical
as possible.

How many sites are you panning on hosting. Usually a Server is needed for hosting but it all depends on a more intricate explanation by you on exactly what and how are you planning it implement.

Start with Apache. Get your hosting working internally, then you should be
able to export - may require something like dyndns (dynamic DNS).

I wouldn't use any Windows OS as a web host. *nix is the way to go for web
hosting...

You should use a Web hosting service, because you don't have the
knowledge or expertise to host a Web server that's going to be exposed
to the public Internet using MS and IIS or Linux and Apache. All you'll
be doing is exposing a machine that is not protected and harden to
attack, and it will be nothing but hack bait and a jumping off point for
hackers to attack other machines and networks over the Internet.

Alan - I agree with Jack...'s posts. If you reconsidering a "true web
site" - providing service via the Internet - server software would be a
requirement - if you are considering something along the lines of an
intranet "web site"
investigate IIS (Internet Information Services).

guess which OS is dominant in the World Wide Web - including replacing UNIX
as the choice for Domain controllers.

I have to agree too. I build web sites and servers for a living - and
I would never do my own hosting. Pay someone to do it for you who pays
full time attention to server software and security issues as well as
network device security. It's a full time job... for more than one
person.

You can buy hosting from a variety of firms for a very reasonable
cost. Try hostgator.com if you have reasonable technical skills. If
not, go with someone like godaddy.com but be prepared for a greatly
reduced feature set.

I suggest Linux/Apache based web hosting over Windows. I like WIndows
too for the desktop and Intranets but it doesn't do the job as well
when you buy shared hosting.

Linx/Apache is dominant and in no danger of being displaced. What's
your point?

I think IIS7 is included on Vista Business, but I am not sure about Home
Premium. I understand why you would want to host your own low-visitor sites
on your own computer. I do that too on Windows Server 2003, and have a
relatively high-traffic site on a paid hosting server for my father's
company. As long as you are moderately computer savvy, there is little to
worry about.

I think you will have to add IIS manually in Add/Remove Windows Components
in a desktop version of Windows.

If you have a dynamic IP address, get a free domain from www.no-ip.com, and
run their Dynamic DNS client as a service. You can also use their services
with your own domain for a small annual fee.

Ask again if you have any specific questions on doing any of this.
