web page translation...

Hi there,

Whenever I type a certain URL in, it leads me to an Apache test page.

Where is the translation for this as when I put the numbered IP in for that
web page, then it will come up properly.

I see the hosts file in Windows\System32\drivers\etc, but the hosts file
appears clean.

What is causing this?

Gordon, I'm not sure I understand your question or what the hosts file
has to do with anything. It would have been helpful if you had provided
the "certain URL" for others to check. Normally when you go to an URL
and get the Apache test page, it means that the web server that is
hosting that webpage (the URL) has not been configured correctly. Unless
this is your own web server, it has nothing to do with you at all.

Since you can get to where you want to be by putting the IP address of
the webpage, perhaps the URL you have is incorrect. If this happens to
you with other webpages, I would say that you have a DNS problem. If it
doesn't, it is likelier to be with that particular website. Perhaps
*they* have a problem with their DNS. Perhaps contacting the webmaster
of the site would be a good idea.

Well, is this a URL you can give us, that way we can go look and see
what the problem is. It could be a problem on your DNS server, it could
be a problem with the DNS on the page's "Host" machine or it could be a
problem with your browser. There are probably several more "Could be"
situations I haven't mentions and unless it is a private site that can
only be reached from your network then the URL would be a good place to
start.

When you lookup that hostname, does it actually come up with the same IP
address you are using?
