Webpage email link won't open -- error message -- default email client not installed

Help needed. When I click on a hyperlink on a web page, instead of
opening up a box to send an email, I get an error message saying
Internet Explorer could not complete the operation because the default
email client is not properly installed. I have checked several times
and ways and Windows Mail is in fact the default email client. I found
some old posts on how to fix this problem with outlook but none for
Windows Mail/Vista. Thanks.

The easiest way for you to enable you to access it is for you to ensure that
you have Preview Pane enabled and the preview pane header, both found in
View menu>layout.
You should see a paper clip at the right side of the header pane, click on
that and save it.

Sorry again, I am really confused, all this is enabled but that pertains
to getting attachments from email, right? The only email I have
received is a notification that a reply was posted to my message and I
don't see any attachment there. Sorry to be so hopeless here.

Hi Peter, don't be too confused, leave that privilege to us guys trying to
figure out the set up on your PC :-)

It looks like you are accessing the newsgroups via you ISP news server,
vBulletin? They appear then not to allow attachments?

In Windows Mail - Vista, you have a built in access to the MS News server
via "Microsoft Communities" in the folder tree. To see your message etc in
that server click this link:

This link should open a WM communities account for you.

OK thank you I have now saved the file and its name seemed to drop the
..txt automatically, just one last question, how do I "merge" it with the
registry? Thanks so much.

As per the original post from Dr Cochran MVP:
-----------
"Your mailto protocol may be broken. Attached is the mailto registry key.
Save it to disk and then rename it to remove the .txt file extension and
then click on it to merge it into the Registry. That should fix it."
--------------
Right click>Merge.

Thank you for your continued patience with a newbie. I feel really
stoopid, but when I right click on the icon for this file "merge" does
not come up as an option. Do I need to save it someplace particular?

If you saved it to your harddrive, maybe Documents etc? Then right click the
file and Rename it to mailto.reg, then click on it.
HTH?

Change the .txt extension to .reg. Then you can either double-click
on it, or right-click, merge.
