I have Windows Vista Home Preminum on my Compaq Presario SR2173WM and when
my computer installed the latest updates on the 12th my webpages stopped
displaying so I removed two of them which are the following KB933566 &
KB913213 and it displays just fine. I know it's a security update that I need
but it causes my computer problems. I have to uninstall these 2 updates daily
since my pc automatically install them every night to surf the net. Is there
another way I can resolve this issue.

I also have this problem occured last night (13th) when I installed the
latest updates. I find it hard to believe that MS have released an update
which prevents IE working (it also appeared to cause problems with Outlook,
but to begin with, Firefox seemed to work fine, so it appears to be an
intra-MS problem.) However, the fact that installing the update causes the
problem, and removing it solves it, seems to suggest MS update is at fault.
Interestingly, IE says "Cannot display the webpage" but the "diagnose
connection problems" link says it hasn't found any problems.... hmmmm.
Does anyone have any solutions OTHER than uninstalling updtes which MS tell
us are important security features?
Any help much appreciated (including any opportunity to let MS know that
they appear to have a bug in the system directly!)

I have a similar problem running XP SP2. After the automatic installation,
IE7 won't access the internet. I can download my mail in Outlook Express
which means I'm connected to the internet, but IE7 will not connect. I
restored my system to a date prior to the download and IE7
works...reinstalled the patches and IE7 wouldn't work. Had to turn off auto
update and restore prior to patches to get IE7 to work. Don't really like to
run without current security patches, but necessary to be able to connect to
the internet through IE7. Any suggestions?

I am having similar problems plus a host of others. I listed them in the
thread "Updates Severely Damaged PC". One I left out is that Outlook will
open but will not send or receive despite the fact that I have a live
internet connection. As I said in my aforementioned thread, I can't get the
updates to uninstall but I have not tried it in safe mode yet.

I have the same exact problem with XP Service Pack 2. After I restored my
computer to a previous date, I downloaded another browser program and then
ran Windows Update again. Once again, Internet Explorer was rendered
unusable. I'll use the alternate browser until the Internet Explorer problem
is resolved. At least I have the security updates installed.

It's not just Compaq. I have experienced the same problem after installing
KB933566. Uninstalled and everything is fine except now cannot send/receive
email trough windows mail!!
Do these guys not test things before they pump them out en masse to the
unsuspecting public?

I have had 4 computers "infected" with the oh-so-broken KB933566
update. As far as Microsoft testing these things out... they do... by
having us do it for them. Two of them are XP and two of them are
Vista systems, all 4 on IE7.

On the XP computers, it disabled things like log-in pages and secure
sites (https). On Vista, IE was completely dead. I also got the
messages about my connection being fine and no errors or problems
found. XP would crash and give an error screen.

If you do not want these updates, change how your updates are done.
You can read about the choices when you go to the settings page for
Windows Update. One of these includes the updates being downloaded
but wait until you choose which ones to install. That's what I now
have my settings set to.

This brings me to a question, although I am somewhat computer
literate, I am not able to delete/uninstall this from XP like I did
with Vista (because it had a review screen showing you updates -when,
where and why- and it allows you to choose to uninstall). I cannot
find something similar with XP, nor is it listed in Add-Remove
programs (W98 would list these updates and patches here). So other
than going directly to those files and manually deleting them and
deleting the key 8d188b697etc from the registry, how can I do this
properly so I do not remove something that I really need? I googled
with no results.

FWIW I hadn't even noticed I had it applied until I checked. ; }
So, it's not causing any problem symptoms here...

Looks like you have something else installed which is incompatible
and interfering. You won't be able to use IE7's -extoff option
to try to test that hypothesis, since WU needs to use ActiveX
but you could still use the Manage Add-ons tool to (for example)
just do a blanket disable of all add-ons you have ever seen,
unless the Publisher is Microsoft Corporation. (Or do other
more general clean-boot troubleshooting if necessary.)

It is on mine, perhaps just not where you're looking?
It's under the group label: Windows Internet Explorer 7 - Software Updates.

Hint: make sure that Show Updates is checked at the top of the A/R P window.
