I have several favorite websights set as shortcuts...Today...suddenly
"Mozilla Firefox" appeared on them...now I'm only allowed to open them with
Mozilla Firefox (whatever that is)...I'd like to just go back to allowing
"windows" to open the shortcuts...but don't know how..

You need to reset Internet Explorer as your default browser. Usually, you
will be asked about setting Internet Explorer as default when you open it.
You can choose this option in Internet Alternatives > Programs tab >
Standard web browser.

If this doesn't work, open Start Menu > Accessories > System tools >
Standard programs > Set standard programs, and choose Internet Explorer as
default for all extensions and protocols it can open.

Also, remember to disable the standard web browser check in Firefox's
settings, so you won't be bothered with that any more. Open Firefox > Tools
menu > Settings > Main > disable standard browser startup check.

Firefox is another browser. See how to set your default programs in this
tutorial.
