No such problem here.

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

Assuming WinXP:

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? If it does,
do NOT reinstall IE7.

Uninstalling IE7

How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177

IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:

4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

[And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.]

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

thanks PA Bear for your response - tried your suggestions without success

it is odd that the web site opens correctly and without error messages in
ie6 and other browsers, only in ie7 am I unable to open the website and only
get the error message ---- this concerns me as how many people have loaded
ie7, go to our website, and cannot open it (but could if they were using
another browser) ---- is there something in the server code I should look at?

Hi,

Just to confirm you are not alone in your findings, I'm able to connect to
your site with IE6, Firefox, and Opera. Trying to connect to your site
using IE7 or Avant throws up the "http/1.1 500 internal server error" page.

Using the User Agent String Utility made no difference, nor did lowering the
Cookie settings or placing your site in the Trusted Sites zone.

Good luck,

Donald Anadell

Did you uninstall IE7 exactly per the link I cited and find that the problem
didn't exist in IE6?

If so, did you then reinstall IE7 exactly per the other link I cited?

Try Clean Boot troubleshooting: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310353

Hummm, strange indeed....

If I upload the source code and images to my own server I have no problem
opening it up in (IE7/WinXP/default HOST)...but clicking on her link with
IE7 here produces that same error page "http/1.1 500 internal server error"
that the OP is getting. Maybe something is going on at one of the Hops?

That's surprising. FWIW the only way that I have been able to see the "page"
(4 images and links) was to use telnet or Fiddler's Request Builder.
I suspect there is something about my User-Agent that it just doesn't like:

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.590; .NET
CLR 3.5.20706)

In fact, since there is no scripting in it I should be able to use Fiddler's Rules
to change the User-Agent...

It doesn't like IE6 so that's consistent with your MSIE 6.0 utility result:

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)

but seems to like IE8...

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.2; WOW64)

Netscape 3...

User-Agent: Mozilla/3.0 (Win95; I)

and Firefox:

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.0.5) Gecko/20060719 Firefox/1.5.0.5)

That's interesting. It's the OS version it's getting hung up over?
E.g. the only common detail for the ones which are failing is the 5.1
versus the 5.0 (for Firefox) the 5.2 (for W2KS IE8) and the Win95
for Netscape 3 which all work Ok. YMMV ; )

Another thing to be aware of is that the site ignores if requests are
explicitly HTTP 1.0 and just treats them as HTTP 1.1

FYI

Failing Browsers:

IE7 Browser : Results in (HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error)
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; Avant
Browser; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)

IE7 User Agent String Utility: results in (HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error)
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Avant
Browser; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)UA-CPU: x86

Avant Browser: Results in (HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error)
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; Avant
Browser; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)UA-CPU: x86

Working Browsers:

IE6 Results in (Site loads correctly)
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)

Firefox 2.0:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11)

Donald,

Please clarify what that means. I was interpreting it to mean that you weren't
able to connect using the utility but that implies a User-Agent with MSIE 6.0
which I now realize works? Is there any difference between the two User-Agents
then, the real MSIE 6.0 versus the spoofed one?

TIA

Robert
