Weird mouse & folder problems after updates

I hate the way Vista just downloads endless Mbs of updates and then reboots
without asking permission when it feels like it, even when applications are
open.

After the last updates I've had weird things start to happen on my laptop.
At first the mouse or fingerpad right click functions ceased to work, and
when you opened a folder, you could select the folders in the navigation
sidebar and the corresponding contents would display in the folder window to
the right, but you couldn't select them in the folder window with the mouse
or fingerpad, and the doubleclick would not work, except, strangely enough,
for the last two icons in the list. The only way to open files was to open
the application first and then load the file (desktop icon doubleclick and
menus still responded to mouse commands). But even then even the dialogue
box in Word would not respond to mouse commands and you had to use the enter
key instead to open a file. Scroll bars also would not work with the mouse,
either in applications or on desktop folders. Text could also not be
highlighted with the mouse. THIS IS NOT A MOUSE HARDWARE OR THIRD PARTY
DRIVER PROBLEM since the fingerpad also would not work in the same manner. I
also tried the mouse in several USB ports and that made no difference
either.

This seems now to have spontanteously stopped happening (perhaps since the
last update?) but today the Start Bar at the bottom has disappeared and will
not pop up, even when I uncheck 'hide startbar'. I'm hoping that when I
reboot the machine it might work again, but why is Vista so full of annoying
bugs like this? Has anyone else experienced this one lately?

Change from "Auto download and Install" to Notify you when updates are
available"
in Automatic Updates.

Further to this problem, weirdly enough when it is occurring and I drag the
affected program window, folder or dialogue box to my second monitor
connected to the laptop, it works fine on that screen. What could cause
this?
