HI,
I keep getting a notification about the non-support date of WindowsXP
SP1 on Oct. 10, 2006. And to download SP2.

It's in the systray with a 'star' icon... not the world/butterfly
icon.

When clicked on, it takes me to Windows Update page.. or one that
looks like it.

Are other people getting this wierd icon.. is it legit or malware?

Options are to download it... no other options.

My other computer with Windows XP Home SP1 has never gotten this
notification ... sharing the same ADSL connection.

I haven't run spyware check yet... just wondering if MS would change
the systray notification icon...is it actually from MS?

What steps can I take to find out if it's a real MS
notification/download?

Thanks,
EW

It is real. Support for XP SP1 will cease in October 2006. SP2 has been
out for two years now, and it greatly enhances your security.

Thank you for the info .... I feel better about the 'Star" icon,
somewhat.

Now, my computer, (a Dell) has the Windows Update Notification icon in
the Tray, waiting for me to "Accept an end user liscense
agreement".... of which doesn't say what the "update" is.
I'm assuming it's the new Windows Genuine Advantage snoopware.

When SP2 came out, installation instructions said to update the BIOS,
Hardware Drivers, and scan for spyware. Well, my husband's Gateway
computer has an error in the load to Floppy feature to update the
BIOS... of which it doesn't load to the boot drive screen. So, I put
off upgrading to SP2 for that reason... it's one of those viscious
cycles, where the fix is flashing/updating the BIOS! It's a known
error on the Gateway Support site, but .......... every time you
e-mail/call them you get a different support tech person who doesn't
know the whole story or doesn't want to get more technical about it
other than what is on the web page...(now his free support is expired)
it was just easier NOT installing SP2... I keep our computers secure
and up to date, without Ms's new and improved security features.

About this Windows Genuine Advantage update........ It doesn't say
what it is they want me to "Accept" the end licsense agreement to. It
has a cancel button, but that just cancels the dialog box to the Tray
again. It's forceware.. plain and simple. I think that in itself is
being quite sneaky on MS's part.

We've gotten all the other WGA installs before this one, 1 a day for a
while there... what more do they need? I understand they keep
updating the WGA program, but I, personally, am getting tired of being
a guinny pig for their rush-job forceware.

Evidently, my husband Agreed to and downloaded the new and improved
WGA 'feature'. Now, he's getting the "star" icon, trying to force him
to upgrade to SP2. I thought I could just wait till we get him a new
computer and upgrade to Vista when it comes out, instead of going
through all the headaches of upgrading to SP2.

But who am I to know what's best for our particular computers!!!!

I agree, it's punishing the legal Windows users...

EW
