I currently have three machines in my cubicle, all of which I'm trying
to run windows update on, and two are having odd problems. All are
running XP Pro, hooked into the same switch.

Computer one (my normal computer): Has an ISA client; however,
disabling the client allows me to download and isntall critical updates
no problem.

Computer two: (new hp dx2000 tower) I installed XP Pro (w/ SP1) and
nothing else (except Office XP,) and it won't download a single update.
None. I installed SP2 from the downloadable EXE, and it still won't
update. I've tried reregistering the dlls already. This computer did
not have the ISA client on it before, but after I couldn't update at
all, the ISA client was installed, though it is now disabled. I'm
attempting right now to install optional updates and see if they work
(I've found in the past that I could install optional updates, but not
critical ones.)

Computer three: (new compaq nc6000 laptop) Installed XP Pro, ran
updates, everything was fine, up until I installed SP2. Now it won't
update with the critical updates. So far, I've installed nothing except
for running the HP recovery CD to install drivers and hardware
programs. I'm also attempting to update non-critical updates on this
one as well.

So far, both computers are downloading the non-critical updates just
fine. I'll update if there are problems

Any error I get is 80072efd (cannot find/connect.)

I have vacation after today, so if anybody can get back to me sometime
soon with any ideas at all, I'd really appreciate it.

The non-critical updates downloaded and installed with no problem, the
critical updates did not.

Now, if I go to update again, I'm going to have a cricitcal updating
for .NET waiting for me (I downloaded the .NET framework as one of the
non-critical files,) and I believe it will work fine (has in the past,
even when other critical updates would not.)

Try the following. It worked for me when having similar problem. On XP
machine, run msconfig and go to services. Look for IIS and disable. After
this is done, you can download from Microsoft the Microsoft installer cleanup
utility named "msicuu2.exe". Try installing again at the web site with IIS
disabled. After enable IIS again.
