Well everyone, I had one I have never seen before maybe someone out there can
help...
User has XP Home and upgraded to XP Pro w/service pack 2 (version 2002)
anyway. Dial Up networking cannot and will not be installed. It thinks it is
on a broadband connection, and has all of the Internet signup radio checkmark
buttons greyed out. This is a regualr HP Computer, nothing special about
it... But Dial up Networking will not initialize... Cannot sign up for any
ISP, I removed and reinstalled several times, but no luck. Removed networking
adapter, still no luck. Any ideas before I wipe it?

"Chip Hall",

I am sorry you are running into this issue. The SP2 installation did not go
flawlessly, so I suggest in this case uninstalling it (assuming you have the
backup) and trying it again. Here is a link for more instructions regarding
this procedure:

First, we take the Windows XP Operating System (OS) back in time to a moment
when it was stable prior to installing Service Pack 2 (SP2):

1. As you boot the machine, press F8 to enter Safe Mode.
2. Log into the local Administrator account.
3. Click Start
4. Click Run
5. type: msconfig
6. Click OK or hit the <Enter> key.
7. When the System Configuration Utility opens, make sure you are looking at the
General tab.
8. Click the "Launch System Restore" button. This will open a wizard.
9. On the calendar in the wizard, select (day before the date that you installed
SP2.).
10. Click OK through the wizard and reboot. This should bring you back to a
working and stable Windows XP.
11. Follow the steps in getting Windows XP prepared for SP2 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx
12. Get a better installation of SP2 by ordering it online here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx
13. Or download, save, and then install SP2 all by itself from here:
SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center (please disregard the IT
Professionals and Developers portion of this, as it will run on an individual
computer as well: (266 MB)

14. Next, scan for updates, and reply back to this thread, letting us know how
this went!

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
