Well, I installed SP1 and now my "Search," which *was* on the right hand side, above network, control panel, etc., is *gone*

It's gone...! I installed SP1, and it wiped out the "search" feature
which was on the right hand side when one clicks the "start" logo.

Also, SP1 totally messed up all my personal settings, especially my
video settings as well as reposition my picture to the monitor using
the monitor buttons.

BTW, I had a screen which asked if I would participate in improving
Windows by joining a forum, however, when I went looking for it, it
wasn't there. If anyone knows the URL, please post it. I sure would
appreciate it. Many Thanks.

This I can say: in all the years of running XP Pro, 1 week of Vista
Home Premium has easily surpassed XP in sheer irate, "ready to FDisk"
that sucker irritation.
This one is truly a Bill Gates Special.

Yes, it's a UI change in SP1.

You can also restore the context menus -

Within REGEDIT, navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find

.... rename or delete the REG_SZ: 'LegacyDisable' value.

Right clicking on the Start button or any other folder will now offer
the 'Search' context-menu option.

Each of the following will also bring up the Search Results window -

1. Hit the Windows key and enter your search criteria
a) hit the up arrow three times and then enter if you wish to
search your local media
b) hit the up arrow twice and then enter to search the Internet
2. Windows Key + F
3. Click the task bar and hit F3 on the keyboard
4. Open Windows Explorer or use 'Start --> Run' and type "search-ms:"
(without the quotes) and hit enter
5. Open an Explorer window and hit F3
6. From a shell [cmd.exe or PoSH], enter -

C:\>start search-ms:

7. Create a regular shortcut -
- configure the target as 'explorer.exe start-ms:'
- name it 'Search' or something to your liking
- drop it in the 'Quick Launch' toolbar next to the 'Start Menu'

NOTE - once within the 'Search Results' dialog, enter your critera
followed by ENTER to search local media or SHIFT+ENTER to
feed your criteria into IE's default search engine.

Hi Mike,

Thanks a million. I'll do it.

Mike, if I may ask, do you know of a way to get around these
irritating dead-ends of not being able to save a simple text file from
notepad to c:\?
I had a message from another newsgroup I wanted to save in C:\, but
Vista wouldn't let me, so I copied it, opened notepad, and pasted it,
and attempted to save it to c:\, without success. Finally, I roamed
around until I found another .txt file, opened it, pasted the message
in it, then added to the file name, and left it where I found it.

I dearly miss the simplicity of XP Pro.

Well, I don't use IE except when I'm manually updating XP, Vista, or
IE, however that's a neat trick to know.

Mike, is there a site or a discussion group where I can learn how to
resolve all these major and minor irritations I have with Vista -
before I KILL IT - and so I won't be posting so much here in this NG?
Y'all are helpful, and I appreciate you very much. It's just that
when I resort to posting here, I know my irritation "overfloweth" to
almost uncontrollable ** anger ** which I don't like to display, as
I'm really an easy goin' fella', until something like Vista starts
telling me what I cannot do -- something I paid for, not Bill
Gates...!

Thanks for your reply and time, Mike. I really appreciate your help.

It's late, so I'm headin' to bed.

Hi Charles,

Thanks for the help. I'll have to get to this tomorrow, as it's past
11 PM and I'm dead tired. Didn't get to bed until 1:30+AM last night,
and it has caught up with me. I'll get after it ASAP.

Thanks again.
