pjp,
Try the following.
When you create the Hotmail acct through the POP Mail acct wizard, don't use
, but
, or
. You will change it
after setting up the rest of the account settings. As I previously posted.
One of my Hotmail accts was set up before 2006 change, and the other was set
up in 2010. Both work with the Following settings:
In WLM: Hotmail Acct Settings:
Server Tab:
POP Server: pop3.live.com
SMTP Server: smtp.live.com
Advanced tab:
Outgoing Server Port: 587
Incoming Server Port: 995
SSL Checked for both ports

Hotmail does "speak" POP3 as I have/had no problems accesing it using
Outlook Express under XP. I believe it's because I've had the account so
long as I seem to remember years ago them eliminating access that way to new
signups. I'm unsure if that was actually the case and if it still is.
It appears the "new" Windows Mail in Vista that replaces Outlook Express
specifically locks out entering certain types of email addresses. The little
research I did implies they didn't build into it the ability to utilize web
based email. They seem to have done this by simply parsing the entered email
address even though that seems way to simplistic. However, that completely
ignores cases like mine where I can use a POP3 access method with hotmail
because the minute I enter the server address (which I must) it throws up
the "no no".
Just stupid but as mentioned in my case I just added Outlook to my installed
Office suite, installed the "Hotmail Connector" I already knew about because
we had to go through a similar episode with wife's Win7 pc and I have both
news reader and email on the one pc.
