When I hit the road, and use my Win7 netbook instead of the iMac, I just
track down profiles.ini and the profiles folder, and move them between
the computers.

Oh well. I do have email now on newer Vitsta pc and I can monitor newsgroups
also on same machine so guess I can live with it. I managed to get all my
contacts into Outlook from OE but looks like I'll just have to backup all
saved emails etc from OE and accept not being able to easily get them into
Outlook. Ones I "need" to keep I'll just forward to myself from OE and pick
them up in Outlook. Time will make most of them unnecessary. Outlook versus
OE is a switch. Wonder why MS made names so similar when programs are so
distinctly different.

pjp,
When you run the Account setup for the hotmail acct. Instead of using
(w/o quotes) as the acct name, try using . After
going through the server setup and pressing Finish. Go back and edit the
account name back to from .

No, it's NOT newsgroups (I'm reading and answering this using Win Mail under
Vista) that are a problem it's collecting email from Hotmail. Go to setup
hotmail account and it explicitely states can't setup Hotmail, Gmail etc. I
assume it's parsing the "hotmail" part and purposefully blocking my setting
it up even though I've had the account so long Hotmail still allows me
POP3/SMTP access as it didn't "force" me to abandon it years ago when they
stopped it for most, e.g. I use OE to access Hotmail on my XP pc along with
the other email accounts I have.

Argh! Means email stays on laptop running XP where-as I'd finally decided
newer pc was stable enough to "use it" for that to find out can't.

MS so often's "new and improved" is just so much more often "changed and
restricted more" gets tiring when it's repeated every single new version.

I haven't had any problem using windows mail for both email and newsgroups, and
have had no problems using it to access all my amail accounts. I did hasve to
play with it a bit to get it to look similar on the screen.

Was no problem using XP but are you running Vista? If so, how are you
getting Windows Mail to access Hotmail? I can get it to work for my other
regular ISP email accounts that are POP3 but for Hotmail it just locks me
out not giving opportunity to fill in any blanks.

What I ended up doing was installing Outlook from my Office suite, then the
Outlook Connecter to access all my email accounts and use Windows Mail for
just the newsgroups. Works but really annoying MS just changes things for
changes sake itself sometimes.

I don't use hotmail. Hotmail doesn't "speak" pop3?

Hotmail does "speak" POP3 as I have/had no problems accesing it using
Outlook Express under XP. I believe it's because I've had the account so
long as I seem to remember years ago them eliminating access that way to new
signups. I'm unsure if that was actually the case and if it still is.

It appears the "new" Windows Mail in Vista that replaces Outlook Express
specifically locks out entering certain types of email addresses. The little
research I did implies they didn't build into it the ability to utilize web
based email. They seem to have done this by simply parsing the entered email
address even though that seems way to simplistic. However, that completely
ignores cases like mine where I can use a POP3 access method with hotmail
because the minute I enter the server address (which I must) it throws up
the "no no".

Just stupid but as mentioned in my case I just added Outlook to my installed
Office suite, installed the "Hotmail Connector" I already knew about because
we had to go through a similar episode with wife's Win7 pc and I have both
news reader and email on the one pc.

pjp,
Try the following.
When you create the Hotmail acct through the POP Mail acct wizard, don't use
, but , or . You will change it
after setting up the rest of the account settings. As I previously posted.

One of my Hotmail accts was set up before 2006 change, and the other was set
up in 2010. Both work with the Following settings:

In WLM: Hotmail Acct Settings:

Server Tab:

POP Server: pop3.live.com

SMTP Server: smtp.live.com

Advanced tab:

Outgoing Server Port: 587

Incoming Server Port: 995

SSL Checked for both ports
