Are both Windows Update and Microsoft Update and Windows Genuine
Advantage no longer validating Windows'2000 licences? If not, why not?
There will always be several valid reasons why an end-user must
re-install their OS, and as a direct result MAY HAVE TO re-validate
their license inorder to continue using Microsoft's Update facilities.

For nearly a week now, I've attempted to update re-installed W2K OS's on
two machines, out of three, all of which suffered a complete OS (and
other applications) meltdown resulting from a severe power outage which
crashed all three machines necessitating a re-install of the OS.

Unfortunately only one machine (the Server) could be accessed from DOS
after the crashes (although all three had been structured for this) and
as a consequence I was only able to recover the Server's Registry Hives
for later importation after system rebuild. The Server as a direct
result of this Registry recovery didn't need revivification by WGA; but,
the other two apparently did, and do. I get on one machine an error
message indicating that Microsoft Update is only available to licensed
users of either Windows 2003 Server, or Windows XP. I get a similar
message if I attempt to use Windows Update. The other machine simply
won't load either web-page at all, closing Internet Explorer if I
attempt to access them.

What Gives?

If I run WGA on either machine from within Internet Explorer (using the
stand-alone executable file which was available as a download from
Microsoft's web-site, year or more ago, when the programme was launched,
I get "Valid" codes returned for both installed OS's, just as I expect I
would, and as I did when first validating them when I applied first time
to use the "new and improved" Microsoft Update. Unfortunately it
doesn't open the related pages for the proper insertion of that returned
codes inorder to continue validating the OS'es.

Whatever Microsoft has been doing this past week, or so, has apparently,
for Windows'2000 Users in general, and my three machines in particular,
been resolved.

For the first time in more than two-weeks I've been able to access the
Microsoft Update (and I'm supposing Windows Update) web-site, select and
download all, or any combination, thereof critical, non-critical, other
application, and vendor hardware updates. In addition, Genuine
Advantage Validation has functioned for a variety of selected other
resource files; whereas, previously ALL had failed since the second week
of February.

Whilst the Windows Platform-specific Updates continue to only work if
Internet Explorer is utilized, other downloads requiring Validation are
working using all Mozilla GRE-based web-browsers (including Netscape)
and Opera which (according to the WGA web-pages) is supposedly not
supported at all.
