Microsoft has tried to install the WGA Notification about 20 times in as
many days. It always fails but shows as canceled in my update review. It
always installed OK before. I have taken all the steps recommended in the
discussions. Anything else I can do? Running XP Pro SP3.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB905474 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

Thank you so much PA Bear. I have high hopes this will work.

I'm sure it will.

NB: WGA Notifications tool (KB905474) is frequently updated. Installing
these updates is entirely optional. To avoid Automatic Updates installing
anything, er..., automaticaly, select the Download but Notify or the Notify
Only option. See...

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:
