I've got a customer who's having problems with automatic updates. She tells
me that the first update that gave an error was Windows Installer 3.1
Redistributable which she was able to download and install manually from
here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en.
After that she continued to get update errors from automatic updates. I went
to the Windows Update site on her computer and got an error installing
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool KB892130. I tried lowering
security settings for ActiveX controls in IE6 and deleting cookies but this
had no effect. What to try next? Thanks.

Try this first:

Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

If no joy, post in the WGA Forum as MS employees have a presence there:

Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Windows XP)
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/...=442&SiteID=25

Thanks for the reply. I've already followed the link you gave and it
reported that the version of windows was verified. BTW, she's running XP
Home SP2.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
