I guess Ballmer told them to do something. It's back.

It was back in late November, Michael, and has been rolled out slowly. It
was first pushed to regions where piracy is most predominant. See

The computerworld story indicates WGAN v1.7 came out on 28 Nov 06.
When I got offered it yesterday I reflexively declined it. When had I tried the
earlier version I felt that it detracted from performance - not very beneficial.

Freudi says this one is less awful - I guess I could try again. The whole
creepy caper pushed me toward getting a handle on alternative OS's.
Possibly fedora doesn't encumber the user as much as vista does after
you get to at least mediocrity at being super user - I'm not serious yet,
but I really don't want to be impacted by a Ballmer vs. the pirates brawl.

WGAN remains an Optional update, Michael.

Disguised as "high priority". For whom? Not the end user, that's for sure.

Version 1.5.560.0 of WGAN hasn't been pushed widely via WU/MU/AU,
while 1.7.17.0, the one released around the 20th of February is.

That's not correct, see my reply to PA Bear's post.

.... concerning the lack of information we/the end-user received while
urged to install the only for MS essential/important update. I'm not
ready to state anything about possible performance issues after this
new version of KB905474 has been installed. Not yet.

Arguing that I can't help being a swine is weak. I'm sorry I didn't check.

My testing would be subjective rather than rigorous, so I'll likely
assume that it can't improve computer performance, and not test.

Thank you VERY much, Freudi, both for the info and for the links. I've been
trying to find the RSS feed for WGA for /ages/! <eg>

We shall have a beer or two & think of you at the upcoming Summit. You are
still very sorely missed.

It's only optional if they allow you to decline it, and it looks like
they're not doing that everywhere, or at least they haven't always been
doing it everywhere.

According to the WUA entries in the system event log of all three systems I
use, the KB905474 update has been successfully installed several times last
year - 100% of which happened behind my back.

I used to find the entries more than once in a week sometimes, although
it's been a while now, probably months, since I last spotted it.

Today it's suddenly there again, but with a licence dialog this time: the
very first time I ever get to see that license, as if they've never snuck
it into my system before.

I wonder if the fact that we recently changed to another ISP has something
to do with that license popping up. Our new provider only started fairly
recently, maybe the geographical IP address mapping isn't up to date yet
and they think we're in a different country, or they don't know what
country we're in anymore?
