So you are running smtp and pop3 locally on the machine you are also syncing
with?
If so, do you have a pop3 email account entered in your ppc that is served
by those servers?

I have an i700, 2003se/ASync 3.7.1 (I think this is what your run, based on
memories from past posts) and it automatically tries to check my pop3
account when I put it in the craddle.

IPTools works on 98 (I'm about 99% sure):

It will show you the application that launched the listener. It pulls out
the PID from the api call and looks it up somehow.
You can get the PID from netstat with the -o switch (I like 'netstat -nao',
myself), but I don't know how to look up the process on 98 either. Task
Manager works great on 2k and greater.

I don't sync my inbox either. It just seems to really want to check my pop3
by default when I sync up.

When I first got my PPC I read that a few times for tips. It's nice to get a
chance to try and reciprocate the help a bit.
