What's Activesync 3.7 doing on port 110?

Got something weird going on following install of AS 3.7 on a computer
which is also running a spam filter app that includes local pop3 and
smtp servers.

Never had a problem with earlier AS versions, but with 3.7.1 and a
wm2003 device, when connected, the spam program controlling the local
mail servers reports attempts to access the local pop3 server and
requests that additional mail clients be shut down.

netstat shows that a second port 110 connection is being made from port
1547 on the local machine... it's win98, so I don't know how to trace
that connection back to the app to confirm, but AS is the only
possibility as it only happens when activesync is running and the 2003
device is connected.

I do not have mail sync checked in activesync, and can't see any obvious
way to disable "passthrough" within activesync.

Any observations, knowledge and comments appreciated.

Oh well, that's the only legit program using port 1547 I can think of.

As in "scientific wild-assed guess".

Ahhh... my education continues ;-)

All the evidence points to activesync. Problem is totally gone when AS
is killed.

AS was installed from the CD that shipped with the device... wonder if
it was tweaked by the ppc mfg? ;-)

Will continue to persue... but will be a while since I only use AS about
once a month ;-)

So you are running smtp and pop3 locally on the machine you are also syncing
with?

If so, do you have a pop3 email account entered in your ppc that is served
by those servers?

I have an i700, 2003se/ASync 3.7.1 (I think this is what your run, based on
memories from past posts) and it automatically tries to check my pop3
account when I put it in the craddle.

IPTools works on 98 (I'm about 99% sure):

http://www.ks-soft.net/ip-tools.eng/downpage.htm

It will show you the application that launched the listener. It pulls out
the PID from the api call and looks it up somehow.

You can get the PID from netstat with the -o switch (I like 'netstat -nao',
myself), but I don't know how to look up the process on 98 either. Task
Manager works great on 2k and greater.

I don't sync my inbox either. It just seems to really want to check my pop3
by default when I sync up.

Comments? Thanks for your page:

When I first got my PPC I read that a few times for tips. It's nice to get a
chance to try and reciprocate the help a bit.

Excellent information... makes a lot of sense, esp the fact that the
address is in the device that is attempting to check the email even
though inbox is not running.

When I get a moment, will change the mail server addresses on the ppc
and experiment to confirm.

>> local servers <<

My spam filtering software (ChoiceMail) installs both a pop3 and an smtp
server and automatically processes both outgoing (to collect addresses
for the whitelist) and incoming (to preprocess, remove blacklist and
rules hits) mails, then wait for client pickup.

It's nice as it allows any email client on the lan, including ppc's
inbox, to pick up clean email.

>> 'netstat -nao' <<

Great minds think alike ;-) Use the above _all_ the time and it has
yielded valuable information on many occassions.

Unfortunately, the "-o" option is not an option on win98 where my
activesync runs...

Comments like that make all of the efforts over the years worthwhile...
thanks and your input is not only welcome, but it is also obviously
based on significant skills.
