What's a good choice for print/fax/scan

I just bought a new Vista Ultimate Dell XPS 420, with 4gb ram, and 1tb and
750gb partitioned hds. I have a 10 year old HP DESKJET 882C printer that is
no longer supported by HP and Vista tells me it is not compatible. However
it is printing from my Vista. (better than it did from my Windows 98se).
There are no new drivers for it, I am told.

I have a HP Photosmart 8250 that I have been using as a stand alone to print
pictures from my digital xD card. It wouldn't work with my Windows 98se. I
don't know yet if it is supported by Vista.

My Okifax is not reliable and I need a reliable fax machine as I fax out 20
to 50 sheets at a time.

I have an inexpensive Canon scanner, LIDE 70. My Vista Ultimate tells me
"Vista does not support inkjet printer and scanner". But the scanner works
also.

I would like to get either an all in one that works well and does not eat
ink, or a color laser and whatever they come attached with these days. I can
not get out to shop. Could I please get some suggestions. (I work with a lot
of pictures; I do a lot of faxing, a moderate amount of scanning; and a
small amount of printing every day.) Thanks in advance for any advice.

Virtually all the products on the market are excellent
compared to only a few years ago. Base your decision on
cost of operation, which equates to the price of ink.

While some printers use proprietary cartridges that cost
a ton, other units can be fed generic ink that's
available on eBay and from various online vendors at $2
or so each. Get the sort of printer that puts each color
in its own tank so you needn't replace the entire supply
when the yellow runs out.

They're out there... just hunt.

My personal preference is to avoid all-in-ones. The problem is that
when one portion fails (which it always eventually does), you need to
buy a new unit that supports all three. I personally prefer to buy a
separate printer, a separate scanner, and a separate fax machine. You
can readily buy all three for around $150 US or even less.

Yes, and in addition I think it is better to pay just a little more and get
a document feeder for the scanner. Before I buy a printer I always research
the cost of the ink cartridges. A good place I use is

can you please stop misinforming people???????????

your advice is sound ONLY if you print often, since the printers that have
separate ink cartridges for each color
tend to dry up far faster if the printer is not in use.. since the printer
head is NOT part of the cartridge.

If a person does not print often the BEST way to go is to get the cartridges
that have all 3 colors in one like the HP ones,
and have the printer head ON the cartridge...
that way each time you change a cartridge you have a new printer head.

Same here... so I only buy Epson or Canon, and only those with four or
more cartridges (one black, the rest color) that have generic
equivalents.

By the way... that is an EXCELLENT site, and it's cheaper than the one
I used to use! :-)

I can highly recommend Cannon all-in-one printers. I have a MP600
that's fast, reliable, and produces ultra high output in breathtaking
high resolution full color and yes, is stingy with ink. Several
features I like, you have separate ink cartridges, so you can replace
the primary colors individually as they run out. It does great as a
scanner, serves my purposes as a copy machine, can print directly from
a camera or memory sticks. This particular model I have doesn't
support Fax but other models like following do.

This is my first Canon, having always used either HP or Epson in the
past. I'll never go back to either of those brands. This model is
light years ahead and build very sturdy too, unlike some of the newer
models form other manufacturers that look like they will fall apart if
you look at them cross-eyed. I strongly suggest you check out Canon
printers. Yes my MP600 works fine with Vista and came with Vista
drivers in the box and even said as much on the box.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08...7600_mx850.asp

This is my first all-in-one and I LOVE it. I get some of my desk space
back. No need to have separate printers, FAX machines, scanners
anymore.
