According to a Belarc Advisor scan just completed, my SP3 XP Pro is in need
of re-installing the following "SPO" updates for XP:

KB947864-IE7 on 4/9/2008 Reinstall!
KB950759-IE7 on 6/11/2008 Reinstall!
KB953838-IE7 on 8/18/2008 Reinstall!
KB956390-IE7 on 10/16/2008 Reinstall!
KB958215-IE7 on 12/10/2008 Reinstall!
KB960714-IE7 on 12/18/2008 Reinstall!
KB931768-IE7 on 5/8/2007 Reinstall!
KB933566-IE7 on 6/13/2007 Reinstall!
KB937143-IE7 on 8/14/2007 Reinstall!
KB939653-IE7 on 10/15/2007 Reinstall!
KB942615-IE7 on 12/11/2007 Reinstall!
KB944533-IE7 on 2/13/2008 Reinstall!

....meanwhile, the same system reads all in the green when going to the
Microsoft Update site.

Although I may have had to, I don't recall removing IE7 after having
installed IE8, which wound up getting un-installed after a day or two.

Are the above updates anything to concern myself over?

Probably because they believe "cumulative" means what it says.

I would wonder what Belarc think they are seeing?
Have you asked them?

This may be telling... ; }

Horse hockey! Many of those updates pre-date SP3 (although perhaps not your
install of SP3).

If Windows Update doesn't offer the computer KB972260, IE7 is fully patched.

Uninstalling IE8 automatically returns the computer to the
previously-installed IE version (in your case, IE7).

I suspect this is related to the release of MS09-034, the latest IE cumulative
update, which was only released yesterday. Do you have MS09-034 installed?

If you do, it may be that it has caused one of the files to revert to an earlier
version; or perhaps something about it confused Belarc. Does Belarc Advisor
have a verbose mode in which it tells you *why* it thinks a particular update
needs to be reinstalled?

Harry.

You're running IE8? Then you/your system doesn't need to install
security updates for IE*7* at all (as others have pointed out,
most of the updates are cumlulative and beeing replaced with the
latest available cumulative update anyway).

No. It's ovious that Belarc is on error.

Or IE's been totally horked by an infection or bad install of IE8.

I'm kinda leaning towards the notion that it's really a non-issue due to
Belarc not being on the same page, Pa Bear, especially since I diligently
perform a number of security scans on a weekly basis against intrusion.

In any case, here's what Belarc had to say about it:

"...sorry about the confusion from Microsoft leaving those IE7 updates in
the OS after an IE8 install.

Secunia and Microsoft's web site don't check if the hotfixes currently
installed are "damaged", and that's what you're seeing with those Reinstall
messages. No suprise, then, that they're not warning you about those
updates.

You can use the Microsoft qfecheck tool to double-check those security
updates the Advisor shows are failing verification

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282784

Using it's /v option will show you the particular files that don't verify
too. You can refer to this web site

http://www.theeldergeek.com/using_qfecheck.htm

for a tutorial on how to use qfecheck."

*Below are the results after having done qfecheck.exe via a command prompt:

Windows XP Hotfix Validation Report for____

Current Service Pack Level: Service Pack 3

Hotfixes Identified:
ie7: Current on system
KB923689: Current on system
KB928089: Current on system
KB928090-IE7: Current on system
KB929969: Current on system
KB931768-IE7:

I then checked with Microsoft Updates history, where the following updates
are listed as having been successfully installed:

(MS09-034) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (972260),
Security Update for

Windows XP (KB971633) and Security Update for Windows XP (KB961371)

I'd say you're fully-patched there, Charlie.

If you should ever uninstall IE8 for any reason, make absolutely certain
that you check-in at Windows Update ASAP.

Given OP's last reply, I don't either.
