Which graphics card?

My PC won't run Aero with its current graphics card so I need to upgrade.
How do I know which cards are compatible? I understand that it's not just a
case of buying one that's DirectX 9 compatible.

I'm on a budget and from what I can see elsewhere on the Web the FX5200 is
Aero compatible.

Is there an definitive list anywhere of which cards will work with Aero?

Thanks

The Nvidia GeForce FX5200 is Aero compatible and reasonably priced. I have running one right now.

You don't *need* Aero. It's only a seller's trick.

You don't need Aero but using a card that supports Aero can speed up Vista.
It off loads some graphics processing aloowing the CPU to do other things.

Same here, but I don't get all the visuals of Aero, the Slide Show effects
from the Pictures folder or Photo Gallery are shown in basic mode instead of
using the Scrap book effects.

From the Vista help and support:
In order to see your slide show with high-quality visuals (including themes
and transitions), you need to have a subscore of 3.0 for the Graphics
category in the Windows Experience Index. Some themes also require your
computer’s graphics card to have a feature called Vertex Shader 2.0. To take
advantage of all slide show capabilities, you might need to upgrade to a
more powerful graphics card.

As for Graphics memory, your satisfaction will depend on your desire,
whether you want the new Windows Aero theme or settle for one of the less
graphically intense options such as the familiar Windows Classic or stripped
down Windows Aero Basic. Windows Aero, which is the ultimate experience,
requires a minimum of 64 MBs of video RAM, a Direct X 9 compatible card, 1
GB of dual channel RAM required if you are using onboard graphics. Of
course, if you want the best performance and experience, a dedicated
graphics card is recommended, 128 MBs or “higher”.

It offloads anyway. That does not require Aero. You just don't get 3D
rendering.

It does need an Aero capable (i.e. wddm driver) card though. You don't have
to use Aero but you do need the hardware and the wddm driver to see the
improvement. I first tried Vista with a Radeon 7000 card which is a DX7 card
and doesn't have a wddm driver. I upgraded to a Radeon 9550 which does have
a wddm driver and noticed a speed increase immediately. With XP both cards
performed almost identically. I couldn't notice any difference between them
running Windows. In Vista upgrading to a wddm capable card made Vista faster
both with and without Aero enabled. In fact even with Aero enabled it is
faster than the old card without Aero.
