which updates can I ignore

I assume if I am not using any version of Outlook I can ignore those
updates. Also updates for office 2007 can be ignored if I am using office
2003. What happens if I download one of these accidentally?

Sometimes Office updates labeled for one application include related changes
to other Office Applications. Suggest you not ignore Outlook updates.

Are you using an Office 2007 Viewer? The Viewer can trigger Office 2007
updates.

Downloading one of these updates accidentally or not will do not harm {other
than download time or cost if you pay by the minute}. The update will just
not find any files that meet the update criteria so make not changes.

Hi Linda,

Even though you might not use Outlook, it is part of the Office suite, so
that's probably why you are being offered updates for it.

And though you're using Office 2003, there might be some converters that
have been installed to allow Office 2007 and Office 2003 to read each
other's documents/spreadsheets.

If you accidentally download a high priority update that's not really
needed, I expect that it won't be installed.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

If you don't use Outlook, Remove it from your install of Office 2007. After
doings so, you shouldn't be offered any OL updates.

I am using Win XP sp2. I don't have outlook installed on my computer, but I
do use the other programs in Office 2003 Professional. 2007 was installed as
a trial from May to June, but I have gone back to using 2003. Thanks.

If Outlook (2007 or 2003) isn't installed, you wouldn't be offered Outlook
(OL) updates, Linda.

Should you install an OL update, there's a very distinct possibility that OL
would replace Outlook Express (OE) as your default Mail Client. Installing
an OL update might also enabled sharing of OE's Address Book, which could
cause other problems.

The above notwithstanding, you probably have an Office 2007 Compatibility
Pack installed, in which case Microsoft Update could offer you an update for
Office 2007. Should this happen, it'd be best to install any such updates
to keep your machine secure.

Actually, at least some Outlook updates *are* offered (at least in a WSUS
scenario, and there's no reason AU would be any different) to machines with
Office but not Outlook installed.

Office 2003:

Update for Outlook 2003 (KB943649)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB945432)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB953432)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB953465)

Office 2007:

Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (KB946983)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Junk Email Filter (KB950378)

(Note: these are based on logs from July, the lists may be a bit different now.)

Harry.
