which updates to install from recovery?

Having had to do a complete recovery on my computer, and since I had sooooooo
many problems with previous updates not loading, which updates are "safe" to
download? I'm running Vista, 32bit, home premium. Previously had modules
installer problem. I worry about installing updates that will put me right
back where I was! Ughh.
