Which updates to install?

After using the Vista automatic updates tool, my laptop became very slow and
had mulitple error reports. Microsoft customer service advised me to use the
recovery disk, and then disable auto updates. So how do I know which updates
are "safe" to use?

Today I was trying to use the Windows DVD Maker software for the first time
and it says there is a problem with Windows and to check for updates - 56
available with about half labeled as "important". Please help if you can!

You should be OK with any update - EXCEPT FOR HARDWARE.

Don't install any driver updates.

Ok, so let me get this right...If I get a new notebook in two days fro
circuitcity or bestbuy and it comes with vista64 running on it, you'r
telling me that I DO NOT want to install the driver updates (which
assume will be packaged right along with all other updates). Why i
microsoft sending out "bad" updates, then? wtf? Can somebody pleas
explain this whole "don't update vista" crap to me...I'm scared now
