I have a Dell Studio XPS 9100 computer with Windows 7 Prof, using Microsoft
Live Mail, version 2009, build 14.0.8117.0416. I noticed someone mentioned
a newer version in this newsgroup. Currently I am not experiencing any
major problems with the MLM version I am now using.

Would there be any major advantages in moving to the newer version, and if
so, would I have to uninstall the current MLM version before installing the
newer version? Thanks for any comments and/or suggestions. Sam

You should read through the posts, and decide from there. Microsoft would
recommend updating to the latest version. But many have not liked it, and
reverted. OTOH, who knows how long MS will support the older version (the
latest will not run on Windows XP, so some support is required for some
limited time).

I have only used WLM for the HTTPMail access to my Hotmail accounts; same
with MS Outlook Express, until MS killed WebDAV. Otherwise, I use Pegasus
Mail for email, and 40tude Dialog for news. Both work just fine under
Windows 7.

A caveat with 40tude Dialog (also my newsreader) under Vista/7 due to
UAC is that you must install it somewhere OTHER than the Program Files
folder. For example, you could install Dialog (and other programs)
under a C:\Programs folder (no spaces, shorter name, not UAC protected).

Not a problem under Windows XP, or earlier, but Dialog needs to be
installed somewhere other than the default Program Files folder under
Vista or 7.

If you stick with Dialog and if you later move to Vista or 7, this is
something to keep in mind: change the install path for Dialog.

You're using the latest version of WLM 2009 (and also the last available
2009 version).
Version 2009 is supported for the foreseeable future. Foreseeable does
not mean in perpetuity, nor may it mean until the end of XP's
Life cycle (2014).

WLM 2011 requires Vista Sp2, Windows 7, or Server 2008 R2

The the most significant items in 2011 WLM

1. New Ribbon based GUI
2. Photo email is uploaded to a users Live ID SkyDrive (i.e. Live ID
required) with ability to access photos and modify expiration instead of a
public Microsoft server with 30 day retention and no access to uploaded
content. Photo email now capable of 200 photos and max size of 50 MB per
photo
3. Unread messages gray text resolved
4. More robust contacts database
5. On/Off toggle for Calendar view (right hand pane)
6. Conversation sorting - threads by newest message rise to top, messages
in thread are chronological order [oldest first)
7. Block quoting
8. Ability to disable automatic keystroke conversion to emoticons
9. No stationery support
10. Create rule from message not present (requires menu sequence to
accomplish the same)
11. Inserting '>' in front of replied text in plain text response no longer
possible

Indeed. I figured that out after setting up on Windows 7, then promptly
forgot I should tell people about it.
