Which version of AS for WM2003?

I have been using ActiveSync 4.5 for a few weeks with my iPAQ and I was able
to transfer and sync files without any apparent problems. However, I do
remember that 4.5 did not completely install and I had to halt the process to
get out of it. Nevertheless it did work. Recently, I found that I could not
connect and I tried everything to try and get it to work. I eventually
decided to reinstall AS 4.5. After taking some time to figure out how to
uninstall the program I tried to reinstall it, but it stopped during the USB
driver setup one segment from the end of the progress bar with no error
message. I read some of the other posts on this forum and tried some of the
suggestions, including deleting all temp folder files and allowing AS ports
in Norton. I then noticed that one post mentioned that I should be using v3.8
of AS for WM2003, which I tried. It appeared to install correctly but,
although there was an icon in the system task bar, it would not open. I tried
v3.8, 4.2 and 4.5 but could not get any of them to work. Any suggestions
would be much appreciated. The fact that I did have it working at one time is
really frustrating.

Hi Dave,

If you are using a WM2003, then its recommended to stick with ActiveSync
3.8 assuming you are running Win XP.

If your device is not being detected (ActiveSync icon wheel starts spinning
and then turns green) after installing ActiveSync, then would suggest you
try the instructions on http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/raj/AS40Guest.html.
However, if the device is getting detected then the issue might be due to
the ActiveSync window co-ordinates. Kindly confirm if the device is getting
detected.

Hi Raj,

Thanks for your reply. Just so you know, I have Windows XP Media Edition
(SP3) on my PC and Windows CE 4.2 on my iPAQ. I uninstalled AS 4.5 per your
instructions and deleted rapi.dll. I also deleted the AS program folder for
good measure. I tried to install AS 3.8 (msasync38b5004.exe) but was met with
an error message "setup could not copy the file 'C:\Documemts and
Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\IXPOOO.TMP'". It suggested I
restart which I did. When I tried to install 3.8 again I received basically
the same message but with "\core\inf\wceusbush.cat" added to the IXPOOO.TMP
folder. I then deleted the IXPOOO.TMP folder, rebooted and tried again, but
was met with the same error message. The strange thing is that I had run 3.8
all the way through once before, but I was not able to bring up the window
when clicking on the icon. It may be nothing, but the filename "wceusbush"
makes me wonder if this installation file has been tampered with although.
like I said, it did complete once before. Am I using the proper AS 3.8 setup
file?

I was reading today at http://bevhoward.com/ASync.htm

"Activesync 4.0 is the exception to this advice. Version 4.0 has serious
problems and the current version should be installed in place of 4.0 that
shipped on the CD included with all of the original WM5 devices.
Activesync 4.x is a completely different animal from 3.x versions of
activesync and is required if you have a Windows Mobile 5 (WM5) or above
device.

If you have devices running 2003se or earlier ppc os' you should NOT upgrade
activesync to version 4.1!!! Version 4 drops a number of features available
in 3.x versions (such as the ability to sync via wifi) and uses none of the
new connectivity methods to connect non WM5 devices. At the time of this
writing, the best place for AS 4.x problems is the Microsoft Public
Activesync forum and Chris DeHerra's site FAQs. Google Groups offers good
simple web access to the Microsoft Public group at
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...pocketpc?hl=en

Note, also, if you install Activesync 4.x over 3.x, you cannot revert to 3.x
without manually deleting dll files and making registry modifications...
details on doing so can be found on Chris' site.

Hope this helps.

FYI: http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/acti...shoot-as4x.htm

1.. If you upgraded from ActiveSync 3.x to ActiveSync 4.x and cannot
connect it may be caused by the ActiveSync 3.x USB driver. Try deleting the
driver with the freeware USBDeview application. You must be careful which
drivers you select when using this utility - use this at your own risk.
This process is not supported by Microsoft. Once the old driver is removed,
when you plug in your Windows Mobile device, Windows will reinstall the
ActiveSync 4.x driver.
