Greetings Alan,
App Sharing, Whiteboard, and Remote Assistance require a direct connection or a NAT with
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) status. You can see exactly what Messenger has determined
your connection to be by clicking the Tools menu (or pressing Alt-T if the menu is hidden),
then Options, then Connection category, and then waiting a few seconds for it to determine
the connection.
You can get the other Activities right now (which will work without having to know about any
of these connection issues) by simply changing the locale in your Passport/Windows Live ID
profile to a different country. Some good ones to try are the US or the UK.
