I am assuming that when the activation code goes off to look for MS's server
it cannot find it which means there may be no DNS record for it or else your
system is not able to get to a DNS server.
Domain Name Service is an "Internet" thing but may also be accomplished by a
local server (On your network) or by a Router on your network. It could also
be blocked by a Firewall somewhere on the route. This would not necessarily
be a problem with your installation.
What type of network are you on, if you connect directly through a domestic
ISP then call tech support, if it's a company network call the
Administrator. If you can't do either then you may be looking at Router
settings, your own firewall some other "Security" software. If other
websites work okay then I'd guess at the Router or something running a DNS
service that shouldn't be.
I hasten to add this is mostly guessing on my part and you could also ask in
one of the DNS or Server newsgroups if you don't get an answer here. It's a
complex issue (DNS) so please give details of how you connect (eg ISP or
company network) and any equipment you have (eg router).
