Why do I need a new product key after every update?

I have automatic updates turned on, as recommended.

After every update XP requires a new product key. The Internet reactivation
does not work at times, and I have to call customer service.

Itâ€™s extremely frustrating and an inconvenience. Why do I need a new product
key, Iâ€™m just updating?
