WHY DOES MS RELEASE FAULTY SOFTWARE?!?!

If Microsoft knew by April 15th that many users were having severe problems
with their latest update, why does microsoft continue to offer it as a
download/install to its users before it fixes this update?!?
(My computer auto-downloaded & installed it today April 16th)

I can't believe thousands of people will lose hours of sleep or work because
of trying to find or make their own patch to cover for microsoft's stupidity
in allowing a defective program to be distributed - and automatically.

Perhaps the following will solve your issue:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Also, review the following:

MS06-013: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912812

Internet Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch for Mshtml.dll
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425/

Why do you folks keep spreading this untruth about HP? I have no hp
software or hardware that I know about and the update still broke my
system.

And asking users to edit the registry to fix it is practically criminal.

I followed Maurice N's post (a few below). Answer is found at Microsoft, but
requires a registry edit (!!!???). I sent this message to them:

"This is why computers will be a long while penetrating the couch-potato
market. Why should your update make me have to edit my registry???? Oh,
heaven knows, the only successful computer owner is really the kind of person
who actually gets off exploring and tweeking his/her system (I'm one), but
it's a real nuisance to have to spend an afternoon tracking down the solution
to this kind of problem. It's as if the wheels of my Ford wagon fell off,
and Ford told me I could probably get a couple of screws at Home Depot to get
it back on.

You guys own the world, don't release this kind of goof. I uninstalled the
updates, and I'll disable automatic updates till I find out this has been
solved at your end, not mine."

Why does owning a computer mean having to be Sherlock Holmes?
I might as well be hacking UNIX.

I agree, Tim......good one........I thought the problem was my computer when
my 'My Docs" kept hanging and I have to reboot to get my start-up programs to
load after this 'hanging' thing......I'm with you....this is stupid.......the
updates should not be offered to 'help' when they are full of
bugs....thankfully, I'm not depending upon my computer for business......it's
for fun........boy, this is lots of fun......NOT..

I agree! This update should be pulled until a fix for the fix is offered.
However I feel that people should read alittle about each update before they
install it (Shutoff the automatic update feature and go their once a month
on your own), does this take time?...YES, is it a pain in the
Arse?.....YES, however it is "your" computer and each and every hotfix
changes the way your system operates, this is a little about hotfix 908531.
Did you need to install it?.....Unless one is a complete imbecile NO!

From Microsoft's own website:

Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can
help protect networks from attacks that originate outside the enterprise
perimeter. Best practices recommend that systems that are connected to the
Internet have a minimal number of ports exposed.

In a Web-based attack scenario, an attacker would have to host a Web site
that contains a Web page that is used to exploit this vulnerability. An
attacker would have no way to force users to visit a malicious Web site.
Instead, an attacker would have to persuade them to visit the Web site,
typically by getting them to click a link that takes them to the attacker's
Web site. After they click the link, they would be prompted to perform
several actions. An attack could only occur after they performed these
actions.
The vulnerability could not be exploited automatically through e-mail. For
an attack to be successful a user must open an attachment or click on a link
that is sent in an e-mail message.
