And which Anti Virus or Security Suite is running in the background and scanning ? Did it come with the system or did you install it. Disable the automatic or integrated scanning scanning of your AV or your Security Suite until you have installed the MS Updates and then re-activate it. Might also be worth checking out your Firewall settings also

Arguably, that indicates that some particular Help search filter is
boneheaded, while you are the smarter person here. =)

A more precise definition:

Error Number: 3017 (0xBC9, 0x80070bc9)
Symbolic Name: ERROR_FAIL_REBOOT_REQUIRED
Text description: The requested operation failed. A system reboot is
required to roll back changes made.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, but I think there is a deeper problem.
Each time I click on Windows Update I have a different error, and none of
them suits my situation.
The last one I have is: 'Code 8024D00E'
============================
24 results for WindowsUpdate_8024D00E WindowsUpdate
1. 1 Windows Update error 8024402C
2. 2 Troubleshoot problems with installing updates
3. 3 Windows Update error 80070103

10. 10 Windows Update error 800f020b
11. 11 Windows Update error 8024001b
12. 12 Windows Update error 8007000b
13. 13 Windows Update error 1
14. 14 Windows Update error 80246007
15. 15 Windows Update error 80200010
16. 16 Windows Update error 2
17. 17 Windows Update error 80070422

23. 23 Windows Update error 80246005
24. 24 Windows Update error 800f0828

and again help cannot display it as shown above.

To add:
I have just installed Vista Ulitmate from CD and activated it.
I do not have any other software installed.
I need to check for updates and install them if any available.
What else can I do?

That's the same error, really:

Error Number: 2149896206 (0x8024D00E)
Symbolic Name: WU_E_SETUP_REBOOTREQUIRED
Text description: Windows Update Agent setup package requires a reboot to
complete installation.

That indicates that the system thinks reboots are still required here.

Note that a simple search using most search engines for "0x8024D00E"
returned for me the above text - that's a quick alternative way to look for
the meaning of that error.

I suspect that the "reboot required" errors were too generic to be added to
the help file so far. =\
