Why does my screensaver stop working?

I recently got a new computer and everything is going great except my
screensaver doesn't consistently work. I checked the settings and it is set
to go off after 10 minutes of inactivity (the screensaver I am using is a my
photos slideshow). Sometimes it will work no problem, then it will stop
working all of a sudden (i.e. it won't go into screensaver mode). I check the
settings and they are the same. Then, if I change the time (say from 10
minutes to 9) it will work all of a sudden for a little while. Again, out of
nowhere it will stop working.

I understand there was a common glitch that if you had a wireless mouse or
keyboard it would affect the screensaver. I dont have either oth those.

Any ideas? What kind of programs might be keeping my computer from going
into idle? How would I check for said programs?

Right-click on the Taskbar>Task Manager.
