Greetings,

I am new to Vista, but not to Windows. With this Vista I am seeing this
strange naming convention.

It may just me, but I am having a hard time remembering where I am.

They are different programs. As to where you are...

Because Windows Live Mail is a separately installed program.

They are not the same program at all.

Hi, Kirk.

Every copy of Vista includes Windows Mail, the successor to Outlook Express.
Microsoft is now in the process of developing a successor to WM. MS has
also been playing some of their infamous "name games", involving Live,
Desktop, Hotmail, Messenger and other name components. :>(

The current incarnation of the email/newsreader client is Windows Live Mail;
the current version is build 12.0.1184, released about the end of May. For
your copy, visit:
Windows Live Mail Beta.
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

Note that both the URL and the name of this newsgroup still include the name
"desktop", which was retired when WLMd build 8.0.1226 was replaced by this
latest WLM build.

I see that the headers for your post include:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16480

This indicates that you are still using WM, rather than WLM, so I don't know
why your Programs and Features includes "Live" in the name - but you
probably have both WM and WLM installed.

And, yes, until MS resolves this name thing and settles on the permanent
newsreader name, we ALL have a hard time remembering just where we are.

R. C.,

I have downloaded Window Live Mail Beta, and had problems with 'Black
Screen' which I found a cure for.

I am using it now. It seems a lot like Outlook Express. The icons are
smaller but otherwise it seems the same.

Thanks for your information about with this mail.

Hi, Kirk.

> I am using it now.

The headers on your latest post (9:31 AM CDT 8/7/07) say you were using:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16480

That is NOT Windows Live Mail (or Windows Live Mail desktop, either). It is
the "stock" Windows Mail from the Vista DVD.

Check the headers (use <Ctrl>+F3) on my post and you will see that I am
using the latest build of WLM:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 12.0.1184

Whoops! Maybe MS has been playing some name'n'number games on us again.
:>{ I just started my copy of Windows Mail - the one that came in Vista
RTM. Its Help | About says:
Version 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)

An email that I sent using Windows Mail on 6/7/07 said:
X-Mailer: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16386

But one that I sent using the same program on 7/6/07 shows the same as
yours:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16480

Looks like one of the Windows Updates between June 7 and July 6 updated
Windows Mail - including that number in the headers - although it left the
"16386" unchanged in Help About.

Well, Kirk, I have some new questions for the WM/WLM Team, but it still
seems to me that you are using Windows Mail, NOT Windows Live Mail.

That is a well known behaviour from OE, R. C. Help/About shows the version
of the executable file, in this case WinMail.exe. That does not change
often. X-Newsreader on the other hand shows the version number of msoe.dll
(X-Mailer should be the same, I think) and the header X-MimeOLE shows the
version of inetcomm.dll, which are both updated frequently whenever there
are updates for OE/WM.

Saludos
