Why don't these Windows Updates ever work?

XP just won't download updates. Seems to happen every time there are
updates. Update settings don't matter. Disabled virus and no change. What
does it take?

A call to MS support, perhaps? Some updates - SOME - have been
known to be quite problematical, but I think most XP users will say
that they do not have long-standing download failures. In my case,
though, I am VERY cautious about new updates, I lurk in the support
NGs for a couple days first. And, I ALWAYS set my own RP. Plus,
there are a small number, probably under 5%, of updates I NEVER
install because I cannot figure out exactly what they are for and
what limitations or side-effect problems they may cause.

I am no techie, but there are plenty around here. I'd suggest you
be more specific.

I am having the same problem with Windows XP. I have SP2 installed.
Everytime I go to Windows Update or Automatic Updates are available there are
77 updates that try to install. All 77 of them fail. No error code is
available.

I have my update manager set to notify me and wait for my signal to
download, but the files just won't download. So I went to Windows Udate
site and it tells me there are 11 update files available. I selected just
one which should take 1 minute, but nothing happens when I select download
and install. 30 minutes later still no download. I had this to happen about
a month ago and it took several days and several fixes to get it all
finished. There must be something that I'm doing wrong, but have no idea
what to do. I don't seem to remember this problem before last month. I
have had this XP since November of last year and all updates worked up to
the last month problem.

Hmmm. I just downloaded and installed 4 of the current crop of 9
updates with no problems. I'm still lurking on the others because
I've seen evidence of problems.

One way that may help you is to go directly to MS's update center
and try from there. I believe there's a special download manager
that help many people in your boat. If nothing else, pay MS the
$35 or so it takes for an out-of-warrenty tech support call and
ask THEM! I've done it before on occasion. You can call back as
many times as you need on the same issue. And, if they fail to
find a solution, as they did with some obscure problem I had on
98, they refund the $35.

Incidently, I've never needed to turn off my AV, malware scanner,
or Zone Alarm FW to get updates to work, or, for that matter,
updating my apps on occasion. The exact best time for a visit of
Murphy with malware IN the update file somehow is to have your
protection turned off.

I spent the last 5 1/2 years of my career at Chrysler as
Engineering Information Security Manager and learned early one a
good quote wrt malware or hacking: "the only two kinds of people
that think they've never been compromised is the ignorant or
arrogant." I don't THINK I've ever been hacked, but I have been
infected before, but it was my fault for not having my NAV
updates correct.

Good luck with your problem.

Try grabbing the latest Windows (Update) Agent. I think it's at 3.0. Also,
try and grab the latest BITS. Do a search in the Wondows downloads. Install
and reboot. Either may require you to verify your XP copy is legit (I'm sure
it is as it's allowing you to pull the updates from the site).

If you have had this problem for a while (and at 77 updates, you do) you
better get ahold of Microsoft's support. Security updates use a toll free
number in Canada and the US.

This oughta help you--it did me ~4 times in last week working on others'
comp's. I have just tried the suggestion below, recommended by Bob
((leanin' cedar)
in a previous email on this site (see Joe Medford - 8.10.07) - it worked.

1. Click on Start and then click Run,
2. In the open field type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and
press Enter.
3. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message,
click OK.
4. Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands:
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Luck, & hth, s

You may wanna try downloading Windows Update Agent 3.0 manually,
save it to a folder and run the EXE with parameter "/wuforce"
(without the quotes) afterwards:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

Start -> Run ->
"[Complete Path to EXE]\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce [Hit Enter key]

> No error code is available.

You've had a look into the windowsupdate.log file already?

Bye,
Freudi

I don't have the 77 updates problem. Only 11. What is this BITS?

I think the other individual had 77 (or am I wrong).

See http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=923845 for the info on
BITS.
