Why is a driver update listed under high priority?

Hi,

Im just wondering why an intel video driver was listed under the high
priority items when its not microsoft software and should be listed under the
hardware updates? Bugged a couple of machines out and after the driver comes
from MS - the drivers from Intel wont restore the correct settings.

I had issues, I didn't let it get to the point things would not work.
Several have reported (here and on other forums) that this download "forced"
itself past "notify" settings.

My fix was to do a system restore to the previous day, then when it tried
AGAIN to override my settings, I killed it in TaskManager.

All I can tell you is what worked for me, and as you can see from reading
this forum, not everything works for everybody.

My System Restore did it, removed the "stuff" that came in the last
download, and I turned auto updates OFF until, like you, I see they have this
issue fixed.

This type of update is one which is specifically requested by OEM's - MS
does not normally push drivers out through AU - and is to correct known
serious problems with the OEM drivers.
HOWEVER! - I would personally never take these at face value, and would
prefer to go to the OEM site, and download the latest set of drivers from
there (they are usually more recent than those being pushed to AU anyhow).

Jason..
I've been wondering the same thing since 4/18! Even stranger is the fact
that this one graphics controller update has been sitting for a year... as
"optional". For whatever reason, it is now "High Priority". I only came
upon this thread by happenstance and was suprised to see other's in the same
situation. MU is set to only alert me, when there are updates. I can't even
hide this one, without it coming back. I turned the alert off completey.
I've had the Intel update sitting on my desktop, debating whether or not to
install it. If nothing else.. thank you for letting me know it won't restore
the correct settings!!

All drivers are provide to Microsoft by the hardware manufacturers for
appropriate testing by Microsoft and paying the appropriate fees.
Only then does Microsoft distribute a hardware driver.

In rare cases, Microsoft and the hardware manufacturer determine a driver is
Critical because the old driver causes blue screens or other major issues.
Only then is the driver available as a Critical Update.
Otherwise a driver can be distributed as a Recommended Update.

Generally you should get drivers directly from the hardware manufacturer and
not from Windows Update.
Only get a driver if you feel there is a benefit for your computer,
otherwise do not update drivers.

But if Windows Update has a Critical Update driver for your computer, get
the latest driver directly from the manufacturer.
Even still, research at the manufacturers website exactly what is updated by
the driver.

Conner;
One of the things I like about newsgroups.
An answer may be directed at one, but many can benefit from the information.
Another benefit is others can add to or correct another post helping ensure
accuracy.

Thanks for chiming in guys. I guess what Im saying is if im going to leave
auto updates on for my client pcs without setting up a SUS/WUS server (which
has its own problems), then I have to be assured its not going to pick up
drivers for hardware from the high priority section. As per everyones
recomendations, as well as microsofts and my own, I try never to update
drivers assuming the machines are stable. Thats why I cant understand that
if Intel would aka want a driver delivered automatically especially one that
should be updated thru the manufactorer of the system and not the chipset
maker that it would deliver it automatically - doesnt make sense at all. So
Im under the impression its a mistake that its there. Besides all these
other signs - such as its a year old and why now its forced as opposed to
being recommended. Any MS staff out there that can check into it.

I also couldnt find another way without using system restore which did work
fine in that respect. Im not sure I seen any of the updates settings get
ignored by it either - although Im not doubting it.

But hardware updates that are not MS's should not be delivered in windows
updates high priority section - it should only be MSs software - windows and
their other applications. It just lost my respect for Windows updates.....

I believe its the WGA "optional" (not with automatic updates turned on)
hotfix that is resetting the WUP settings.

Okay, just so I know where we are.

What is WGA "optional"?
And where is it so I can TERMINATE it?

And what is WUP so I can do the same there?

I have already modified all my ASW and AMW programs to NOT ALLOW MS Update
AT ALL, and killed it in "cookie" acceptance and popups.

I want to make absolutely certain this won't happen again.
