Why was formating unsuccessful?

I just purchased a CD-RW to use as a back up disc in case my system crashes
and When I click "burn files to disc" I get a message that Windows was not
able to format the disc. What should I try next to burn a back up disc? I
have Windows Vista and Dell Desktop Dimension E521.

What media are you using? Make sure it's compatable with your burner. Some
of the cheaper media fails during writing.
