Why I have to move devices to different usb ports?

I use a hp pavillion laptop with 3 usb and 1 usb/sata ports. Why do
have to switch my cricket wireless internet card to a different port t
get it to work. I also have problems with my external hard drive too.
I cant double click to explore it, i have to right click and choos
explore while on a certain port.

Why should it matter what port I am on?

USB ports only will supply a limited amount of power to devices plugged into
them. Some jacks on the computer share the same power source. The more
devices or the higher power draw the more likely you will have issues with
those devices. If external hard drives are only powered by the USB
connection (don't have a separate power supply cable to plug into the wall)
then I would recommend finding a powered USB hub to plug them into. That
will reduce the power draw from the computer.

The USB standard is 500mA at 5V to each port, but most laptops preserve
their batteries by supplying one 500mA output to be shared by all USB ports.

You are finding which port is earliest in the chain for priority in
power supply. If you need to use USB devices which have serious power
draw with a laptop, you should use an external powered USB hub. This
will provide the full 500mA to each port.
