Why so many updates

I run two computers on my home network. The amount of time spent downloading
neverending updates for Vista and MS Office 2007 is undermining my use of the
computers. it seems as though everyday I must dowload and install afresh
batch of updates.

So, how can this updating be made less invasive and time-consuming?

If you're doing it everyday, you have a problem.

Sounds like you have some other problem. Microsoft - generally - releases
patches the second Tuesday of each month. If you are installing "as though
every day" <-- something is wrong with _your_ system and needs to be
investigated.

Pay close attention to what is being installed... Make sure it is not the
same updates each time, etc.

As far as why there are updates - because nothing is perfect (and some
people like to expose/utilize holes they find in such things to their own
benefit) and you expose that computer to the Internet (the public) daily.

Microsoft may release non-security updates towards the end of the month.

Only other option [especially on a slow 'net connection] is to see what
needs updating and download the updates manually [of course you'll get the
UAC prompt - unless you use an elevated DOs prompt].

Are any of these updates failing to install?
