Why unable to ping?

I have Vista basic edition. At the CMD command line, I cannot
ping anything successfully (e.g., www.cnn.com, www.google.com).
However, with my broswer, my Internet connection is working fine.

Any idea why that might be? Thanks, Alan

Just because a domain has an HTTP (WWW) server doesn't mean it has to
respond to pings. And these two domains apparently have chosen not to.

Some Web site network firewalls actively refuse ping requests.

Hmm..neither responds to my ping. Microsoft.com doesn't either, for
that matter. Could be my employer's firewall, I suppose.

Tim: Our firewall blocks outgoing ping requests, also, except I have been
set up as an exception in the rules, so I can keep tabs on the internet (I'm
one of the IT guys.)

I went to whatsmyip.com and ran the ping test, which failed. I
also looked around on the Internet for similar problems and
solutions.

In the Network and Sharing Center, I have the following turned on:

Network discovery
File sharing
Public folder sharing
Printer sharing

Password protected sharing and Media sharing are off, and the
network (home) is designated as Private.

Windows Firewall is off. I turned I disabled all non-Microsft
services and everything automatically started (including anti-virus)
using MSCONFIG and rebooted. Same thing --- ping still fails. I can
ping myself but nothing else.

Not sure what else to try! Thanks, Alan
