I have Windows XP MC with all updates installed running on a Dell 9300
laptop.

I uninstalled .NET and tried to reinstall. All of the .NET updates on MS
Update install but 1.0 Service Pack 3.

This may be relevant if you've installed all the updates
Installation of .NET Framework service packs is not completed if you first install security update
MS05-004

Thanks for the info. Am trying this now and will report back results.

Unfortunately, I still cannot install the .NET framework service pack 3 even
after removing the hotfix related to .NET. Actually, none of the ones
listed in the above article were found on my system. But I did uninstall
one and then tried to reinstall the .NET framework 1.0 service pack 3.
Again it failed.

Is this important enough for me to be concerned; or can I just ignore it and
move on?

Did you get any error messages?

You may receive a "Setup Failed" error message or an "Error 1706" error message when you try to
install the .NET Framework 1.0 SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=908907

As it's an optional update, it's entirely up to you whether you install it or move on. I have a
friend who hasn't got it installed on his computer, but should the need arise, I will be installing
it on his computer. I haven't worried about it much at this stage, as he hasn't required the
Framework as yet (nor is he a heavy computer user). When an application requires Framework, I'll
install it on his computer.

Your decision.
