why wont it update

I have gone to update to Microsoft update web site and get the error message,
as so many others have by the look of it are getting the same thing.

Why is it when it has worked for years they tell you its because settings
have been changed, since my last update I have not changed any settings or
added any programs that might change some, I have checked and also tried so
many suggestions on what to do but to no avail, nothing works.

Is it just Microsoft playing up and we just have to wait? So far, out of
the many things I have tried nothing works, has anyone including Microsoft
got a solution for this? A real solution?

Are we supposed to guess your Windows version and what the error was?

Error number: 0x8DDD0018 windows xp and Office 2003 up to service pack three,
i have been to many forums including some of the microsoft ones and tried
many things but so far to no avail, but its pretty obvious that a lot of
people have the same problem, but i am more curious as to why its happerning
to so many people, and i know for a fact i have not changed anything on my
computer, that the only additions i have made are what microsoft put there.

Thanks for answering anyway i just assumed since so many people have the
same problem that it was actually the same problem, my mistake.

So what have you tried? Are we suppose to guess that?

Make sure that you have automatic updates turned on.

Make sure that the Remote Procedure Call Locator is not disabled:
Click Start, select Run and type in:
services.msc
Locate " Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator".
If it is disabled, then right click on it, go to 'Properties', change to 'manual' and
Apply.
Try Windows Update Again

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008"
code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from
the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337

What causes Error 0x8ddd0018
http://www.updatexp.com/0x8ddd0018.html

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page" error message when you try to install an update

Whenever I go to the update site after some time it displays this message
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. "The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
I am trying this for the last couple of days and am unable to update my PC

yes i have tried what is in your post, and i have also gone to half a doz
other forums other than microsoft but first i tried all the microsoft ones,
each change i made as suggested or deleted and replaced what it said to, i
rebooted then tried the site again it did not work so changed settings back
to where they where and went to the next one or the next forum and did the
same, i am just at a loss as to what to try now, sorry did not write down all
the different sites i went to, to find a solution i seem to be living in
dream land assuming i would find an answer before resorting to actually
having to submit a question in a forum, thanks for answering but dont think i
will bother anymore guess i will just have to wait for the next service pack
or find out from someone that is still able to down load updates and get the
numbers of files off them and hopefully microsoft will allow me to down load
them manually, i seem to have no trouble accessing their help pages and every
other page they have.

Judging by the ever-increasing number of posts here in the past few months
that are similar to yours, the behavior may be due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot
infection, all protected by a rootkit infection.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
