I have a laptop and would like to be able to use it at Starbucks or Panera
Bread. I don't understand how it works. Is there a charge and more
importantly, how do I connect? Will all laptops connect or do I need a
particular software? At home I use a router from my desktop.

How you connect varies, but it generally starts by clicking on an icon
on the tray and selecting a wireless network.

Whether there is a charge or not will depend on the owner of the access
point.

Any modern laptop will have a wireless network interface (wifi, with
802.11g probably being the most common, 802.11n being the up and coming
new standard)
