My system tray that displays all the programs running (i.e. printers and
faxs, norton avti virus, etc...) shows the planet with windows logo and says
downloading updates, but it stops at 36% and my CPU usage is always 100%,
slowing my computer down considerably, I know that this isn't normal and I
hope that you can find out what is wrong. I hve Windows XP Home Edition

Thanks

I am having the same problem. I think it is Windows XP sp2 trying to
download and I am on a dial up ISP. I am at 57% after a couple of months.
Everytime I sign onto the internet it resumes where it left off.

How do I stop this down load for windows update in progress and install sp2
from a CD instead?

Try doubleclicking the icon in the SysTray.
What do you see then?

I'm not sure if what I'm thinking of occurs in all modes.
In case it only occurs in Notify me... mode
you could use the following for help:

Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter

control wuaucpl.cpl

There is a link to a help file in that dialog. Tab there and press Enter.
Use the Contents tab (e.g. How To...) or otherwise to find the article:

To change how updates are downloaded and installed

Expand the Notify me... item.

Also if you have installed the XPsp2 Support Tools
open a command window and enter:

bitsadmin /list /allusers /verbose

To see other bitsadmin subcommands enter:

bitsadmin /?

Good luck

Matt don't use Automatic Updates.

Turn them off via the control panel.

Then shut down eveything in your sys tray not essential, (leave AV and
your firewall running). but other apps should not be running.

Then use the start / Windows Updates shortcut to log on to M$ Updates,
go through the update procedure manually using "custom" not Express
install and see if that is sucessful.

If not check your firewall settings.
