Can anyone help please?????
Recently, automatic updates stopped working. It showed as switched off in
security centre, but switched on in my computer, system properties. Having
checked the microsoft site, I found that the following 2 keys were missing:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_WUAUSERV
I searched everywhere and eventually found a command to reinstall auto.
updates.
It worked, both keys were back in place and everything worked fine. But,
when the computer is switched off and re-booted, both keys are missing again
and automatic updates is not in Services. When I re-run the reinstall
command, it's there in Services and works fine, but, after rebooting.......
nothing.
I've scanned my computer with Avast 4.8 Professional and it found 4 Trojans,
which have all been deleted. Something is deleting auto. update, either on
shut down or start up.
Is my only option to reinstall XP??
I don't know if there's a connection, but System Restore keeps telling me
that my computer could not be restored - to any restore point.
Help!!!!!

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks Bear. I'll give it a go. I've tried Windows Defender but I get the
same error message when I try to check for new definitions as when I go onto
the update sight.
If all else fails, I can always reinstall update everytime I log on..........

If you're machine infected, you've got worse problems. Post your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum for expert guidance.
