Widows Update vs. Microsoft Update

I noticed that as of today (the 19th) I do not get Windows Update anymore but
I now have Microsoft Update instead. But it's history of updates includes
those I had previously gotten off of Windows Update just a few days ago.

Did MS shut down Windows Update and send us all to their "new" Microsoft
Updates??

Even when I hit Windows Update on the Start menu, it goes to Microsoft
Updates and I can not find Windows Update anywhere.

Your choice is to either use Windows Update to access only the updates for Windows or
use Microsoft Update to access updates for both Windows and other Microsoft products.
Microsoft Update with expand over time to deliver more updates for Microsoft
Products.

If you decide to opt-out of Microsoft Update, go to the Microsoft Update homepage and
choose “Change Settings”, scroll down the page until you see the option to “Stop
using Microsoft Update” and select the “Disable Microsoft Update software….” Checkbox
and click “Apply changes now”

You or someone else opted in to Microsoft Update.
Microsoft Update is opt in only and there are no current plans to either
force anyone to use MU or shut down Windows Update.
As has already been explained, switching back is easy.

I can't find my installation history at Windows Update! Apparently I've never
been there before! It also stops scanning my computer for current updates at 0%.
Something is mucked up about Windows Update!

I have Win 98SE and I Windows Updated my computer earlier this week with the two
latest critical updates. I have since uninstalled them (Q896688 & Q903235), and
there are no improvements in my interaction to Windows Update! My other User on
this 'puter comes up with a blank page at Windows Update!

When trying to access the Windows Update site, you see a blank page
When you try to access the Windows Update Site, a blank page opens.

Register JSCRIPT.DLL
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll
Click OK.

You may also need to re-register the mshtml.dll

Security or Internet acceleration software, such as AtGuard by WRQ or Trend Micro's
PC-cillin by Trend Micro, may prevent the page from displaying correctly

This has been posted on the NG recently by Gary:

Go to tools, Internet options Security tab and select Trusted sites and select sites
and add http://*.microsoft.com to the list and make sure you uncheck Require server
verification (https for all sites in this zone and click ok. Next select Custom
level under trusted sites and select enable Initialize and script ActiveX controls
not marked as safe and click ok and ok again and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

Done, but with errors on page

This behavior may occur if the Visual Basic Scripting Support (VBScript) component
did not install properly on Internet Explorer or became corrupted after it
successfully installed.
To resolve this behavior, reinstall Visual Basic Script Support for you current
version of Windows. You can install a new Visual Basic Script Support as part of the
Windows Script 5.6 update. To install the Windows Script 5.6 update for Windows 98,
Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows NT 4.0, visit the following Microsoft Web

I've done all that has been mentioned but still cannot get my updates. The
Active X will not install. I've done the "regsvr32 Softpub.dll", that one
worked but the other 3 won't install. Now what?
