Is it possible to change the Vista Sidebar's width or have it auto-hide?
I haven't found a way to change the width, but would like to (assuming
any gadgets can use the extra width.

I also am interested in having the Sidebar auto-hide. I found a gadget
somewhere that claimed it could add auto-hide. I was suspicious as I
didn't think that Sidebar would let a mere gadget change the bar's
appearance. Sidebar claimed my download was corrupt. I didn't attempt
another download.

Because of these issues, I looked into other sidebars, but the only one
I liked that worked was Google Desktop which won't install. I have
Vista 64-bit SP1 and GD requires a 32-bit OS.

Hi,

Unfortunately, neither of those options are available natively.

this isnt exactly what you are asking for, but may suit your needs:

you can right-click any gadget to "detach from sidebar" and place them
anywhere on the desktop. some gadgets will increase in size when
undocked.

try changing the opacity.

try installing google desktop in compatibility mode.

That isn't auto-hide. That is useless.

I think I tried compatiblity mode. It looks like the GD installer
checks deeper for the OS type.

Google provided their own solution: a 32-bit version of Google Desktop
that works on 64-bit versions of Windows. Note: Last I checked, their
download page claims to require 32-bit Windows. Ignore that. I have it
running and it seems to work fine.
