Wife's HP Update Failed Multiple times

Ive tried to update this system and always get this failed update message.
How do you get around this stupid problem?

Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
This update installs a permanent copy of Package Installer for Windows to
enable software updates to have a significantly smaller download size. The
Package Installer facilitates the install of software updates for Microsoft
Windows operating systems and other Microsoft products. After you install
this update, you may have to restart your system.

Try manually downloading the update

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed update (red mark)
and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do a search
for the error code.
