Win 2000 Install Gone

Hi Everyone

I have a problem when I installed SP4.

This is a new fat32 system running Win 2000 Pro, mother board is a Asus
K8N-E with AMD 3400 Athlon 64 processor, 1.5 GB Ram Western Digitial 160 Gb
drive.

I've did this install 5 time now. Here's how it goes.
I install win 2k setup the drivers for the mother board, download & install
IE6, update windows with the windows installer & BITS upgrade. Now I download
& install SP4.

All is well up to here. Now I go back to windows update site and start to
bring down the next 45 Security updates.
I bring down the first 15 "nothing but security updates" install them and
reboot.

I get a NTLDR missing error. I go througt the procedure to replace it, still
I get the same error. So I go into repair using the win 2000 pro repair
console. I see there in no winnt directory.

I am not sure which of the 15 security patches did me in or is it SP4?

Has anyone seen this before or can you suguest how I can troubleshoot this?

Any help will be Appreciated.

I think you need to give more information, probably in a newsgroup
which specializes in your OS. (cross-posting to one now in case
that helps.)

Do you have multiple drives or multiple partitions?
I think that this symptom could happen if your partition table
got clobbered by the update (e.g. so drive letters change).

FWIW something similar happened to me in XPsp2
after I did an ill-advised Repair with only a XP base CD.
It can be very confusing until you realize what must have happened.

I would start by checking the C: drive root for boot.ini and ntdlr:

type boot.ini

dir/a ntldr
